Hunger Games Review

Words Nicola Johnston

Sixteen-year old Katniss Everdeen, lives in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem. The Capitol a highly advanced metropolis, holds absolute power. The Hunger Games is an annual event in which one boy and one girl aged between 12 to 18 from each of the 12 districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle in which only one person can survive.

Author Suzanne Collins was inspired to write The Hunger Games from watching television, on one channel was a reality show and on another footage of the invasion of Iraq, also the idea came from the Greek myth of Theseus.

When watching The Hunger Games other films come to mind straight away, films such as Battle Royale, The Running Man, 1984, The Truman Show and of course reality television shows, even Shakespeare makes an appearance with Romeo and Juliet's star crossed lovers.

The beginning and set up is interesting and builds nicely, Jennifer Lawrence reminded me of a young Juliette Lewis, her performance is strong and believable also it helps that she is very watchable. The costumes work well, however the more lavish, grotesque, circus styled costumes simply don't compare to what The Fifth Element or Blade Runner had to offer. The casting also seems a little odd in parts. The story draws you in and holds your attention, it shocks, it upsets and it also has its humour, but at times feels a little on the thin side.

The fan base is massive, the hype is massive, all eyes are on Lionsgate to see if it can turn in the next franchise on the order of  "Potter" and "Twilight" and I am sure they will.

Let the games begin and it seems the odds will be in favour at the box office!
